Fix a problem

I can't find Pense-bête

Pense-bête has no Dock icon: it lives in the menu bar, near the clock. On a MacBook with a crowded menu bar, its icon can end up behind the notch: open Pense-bête again from Finder (Applications folder) or Spotlight, and its Settings window opens.

A note has disappeared

  1. Open Pense-bête's menu: a note without a check mark is hidden; choose it to show it, or choose “Show All” (⌃⌥P).
  2. If “Hide notes when an app is in full screen” is on (Settings › General), the notes on that display come back when the app leaves full screen.
  3. If the note's display is unplugged, the note shows on the main display.

I can't edit a note

Double-click the note, or right-click › Edit: a single click does nothing, on purpose. If “Let clicks pass through” is on for that note, hold ⌥ while you double-click. Settings › Notes › Edit on Note always works.

A shortcut doesn't respond

  1. Open Settings › General: a message in red flags a shortcut already used by macOS or by another app.
  2. Click the shortcut, then type another one, with ⌃, or ⌘ and ⌥ together (⇧ optional). Esc cancels, ⌫ clears.
  3. If another app also reacts to the same shortcut and Pense-bête doesn't flag it, choose another one: a shortcut shared without reservation cannot be detected.

Pense-bête doesn't open at login

Turn on “Open at login” in Settings › General. If Pense-bête says macOS is waiting for your approval, click “Open System Settings…” and allow Pense-bête in the list that appears.

A message about the notes file at launch

  1. “was unreadable”: the file was damaged; a copy is set aside in the same folder (“Show in Finder” reveals it) and Pense-bête starts over with a sample note.
  2. “couldn't be read”: to protect the file, nothing is saved during this session. Write to us before changing your notes.
  3. “comes from a newer version”: update Pense-bête from the Mac App Store; until then, nothing is saved.
