Unformat Pro strips the formatting from everything you copy, just like Unformat, and goes further: ⌃⌥V types the clipboard where pasting is blocked (Citrix, remote desktops, locked-down sites), and ⌃⌥C copies the selected text or, failing that, the text in an area of the screen. A free app, notarized by Apple.

What Unformat Pro adds

Paste and copy where it's blocked

Four features missing from Unformat on the Mac App Store, whose rules reserve the Accessibility permission for accessibility features.

⌃⌥V

Type clipboard

In Citrix, a remote desktop or a site that refuses pasting, Unformat Pro types your text character by character, as if at the keyboard: the app on the other side does not see a paste, so it cannot block it. Fast, normal or slow speed; Escape stops typing.

⌃⌥C

Copy the selection, or an area

The text selected in the frontmost app is copied directly. With no selection, or when the app does not share it (a Citrix session is only a picture), the screen dims: draw a rectangle around the text, and it is recognized on your Mac and copied.

A history that types again

The last ten copied or captured texts stay in the “Capture history” menu: one click types the chosen text again into the frontmost app. Kept in memory only, never on disk.

Hidden files

“Show/Hide hidden files” in the menu shows or hides Finder's hidden files in one click, whatever your keyboard layout.

In a remote session, switch the speed to “Slow” if characters go missing. When you use the menu rather than ⌃⌥V, a 1- or 3-second delay gives you time to click into the right field.

And all of Unformat

Copy, paste: it's clean

Unformat Pro does everything Unformat does: it lives in the menu bar and strips formatting the moment you copy.

Plain text as you copy

RTF and HTML formatting is removed every time you copy: web pages, word processors, emails. You choose which formats to clean.

Uppercase, lowercase, spaces

Optionally, copied text is converted to uppercase or lowercase, and extra spaces or line breaks at the start and end are trimmed.

Excluded apps

What you copy from the apps you choose keeps its formatting. The list is built from your open apps.

Passwords left alone

Content that a password manager marks as concealed is never changed, nor are files copied in Finder, links or images.

⌥⌘V to pause

The ⌥⌘V shortcut pauses or resumes cleaning when you want to keep a style. A HUD, a sound or a notification can confirm each cleaning.

Your way

Light, dark or system theme, an interface in English, French, Spanish or German, automatic launch at login, statistics of cleaned copies.

Permissions

What macOS will ask you, and why

Cleaning the clipboard needs no permission. The others are requested by macOS the first time you use the feature that needs them.

Accessibility

To type the clipboard (⌃⌥V), read the selected text (⌃⌥C) and send Finder the hidden-files shortcut. Unformat Pro only uses it when you trigger one of these features.

Screen Recording

To read the area you draw with ⌃⌥C and recognize its text on your Mac. Nothing is recorded or sent.

Automation

Only if Unformat (the App Store version) is open and you choose “Quit Unformat”: macOS then asks you to allow Unformat Pro to control Unformat.

Notifications

Optional: for Unformat Pro's confirmations and messages.

Everything is managed in System Settings › Privacy & Security. If Unformat Pro is ticked there but nothing happens, untick it and tick it again.

Unformat or Unformat Pro?

Two versions, one at a time

Unformat

Mac App Store
  • Clipboard cleaning, uppercase and lowercase, exclusions
  • ⌥⌘V to pause or resume cleaning
  • ⌃⌥C: capture of an area of the screen
  • Automatic updates through the Mac App Store
  • Inside Apple's sandbox: Screen Recording is the only permission

Unformat Pro

ElpisIA, outside the App Store
  • Everything Unformat does
  • ⌃⌥V: type the clipboard where pasting is blocked
  • ⌃⌥C: the selection first, otherwise an area
  • A history that types again, hidden files
  • Manual updates from this page; notarized by Apple

Keep just one: running together, both would clean every copy and their ⌥⌘V and ⌃⌥C shortcuts would clash. If Unformat is open, Unformat Pro tells you and offers to quit it. Unformat's settings and exclusions are not carried over: set up Unformat Pro once.

Installation

Four steps, two minutes

Download

Click “Download”: the file UnformatPro-1.1.dmg (2.6 MB) lands in your Downloads folder.

Drag

Open the .dmg and drag Unformat Pro onto the Applications folder. If Unformat is open, quit it.

Open

Open Unformat Pro from Applications. macOS reminds you that it comes from the Internet and that Apple checked it: confirm. It settles in the menu bar.

Allow

The first time you use ⌃⌥V or ⌃⌥C, macOS asks for the permissions: tick Unformat Pro in System Settings.

Your data

Nothing leaves your Mac

Unformat Pro makes no Internet connection and checks for no updates online: ElpisIA receives nothing you copy, type or capture. Details are in the privacy policy.
