FAQ

Yes. Unformat Pro is free, with no account, no ads and no in-app purchase. Download it from its page or from the ElpisIA shop.

Unformat Pro does everything Unformat does (clipboard cleaning, uppercase and lowercase, exclusions, ⌥⌘V, capture of an area with ⌃⌥C) and adds what the Mac App Store does not allow: ⌃⌥V, which types the clipboard where pasting is blocked, ⌃⌥C, which copies the selected text first, the history that types a text again, and the hidden-files toggle. These features rely on the Accessibility permission, which the Mac App Store rules reserve for accessibility features. Unformat updates through the Mac App Store; Unformat Pro, from its page.

Keep just one at a time. Running together, both would clean every copy and their ⌥⌘V and ⌃⌥C shortcuts would clash. If Unformat is open, Unformat Pro tells you and offers to quit it; also untick “Launch automatically at startup” in Unformat's settings, or move it to the Trash. Unformat's settings and exclusions are not carried over: set them up once in Unformat Pro.

macOS lets only authorized apps type on the keyboard, read the text selected in another app and send a shortcut to Finder. Unformat Pro needs this for ⌃⌥V, for the selection part of ⌃⌥C and for hidden files, and only uses it when you trigger one of these features. Clipboard cleaning does not need it. If Unformat Pro is ticked but nothing happens, untick it and tick it again in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.

Screen Recording is only used to read the area you draw with ⌃⌥C; macOS asks for it the first time. Automation is only requested if you click “Quit Unformat” in the alert saying that Unformat is open too. You can withdraw these permissions at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.

By hand: Unformat Pro does not update itself and checks nothing online. Compare the version shown in Preferences › About, which also gives the link to its page, with the one offered on Unformat Pro's page. If it is newer, download the .dmg, quit Unformat Pro and replace the app in the Applications folder: your settings are kept.

The app is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple: Apple scanned it for malware before release. The first time you open it, macOS reminds you that it comes from the Internet and that Apple checked it. Only download it from apps.elpisia.com or the ElpisIA shop.

Copy the text on your Mac, click into the target field in the remote session, then press ⌃⌥V: the text is typed character by character. If characters go missing, switch the speed to “Slow” in Preferences › Paste anywhere. Escape stops typing.

Press ⌃⌥C with nothing selected: the screen dims, and you draw a rectangle around the text. It is recognized on your Mac and copied to the clipboard. Escape or a right-click cancels. Right after installation, the very first recognition can take about a minute.

Yes, within your employer's rules: some organizations block pasting in their remote desktops on purpose. Unformat Pro types the text as you would at the keyboard; make sure this input is allowed. Always double-check a username, a code or an amount before you confirm it.

No. Unformat Pro makes no Internet connection: text recognition happens on your Mac, and the history stays in memory, never on disk. Details are in the privacy policy.

macOS 26 or later, on an Apple silicon or Intel Mac.

English, French, Spanish and German. Choose the language in Preferences › Interface, independently of the system language.

Quit it, move it to the Trash and, if you wish, delete its settings: the steps are on the Account Deletion page (there is no account to delete).
