FAQ
Yes. Unformat is free on the Mac App Store, with no in-app purchase, no ads and no account.
The menu bar dot is green when cleaning is on and red when it is off. Click it to turn cleaning on or off, or press ⌥⌘V.
Pause cleaning with ⌥⌘V while you copy, or add the source app in Preferences › Exclusions: what you copy from it then keeps its formatting.
No, since version 1.1: content that password managers mark as concealed is never changed, even in uppercase or lowercase mode. Files copied in Finder, links and images are not changed either.
Unformat's ⌥⌘V shortcut is global: while it is on, it replaces the one in other apps, including Finder's “Move Item Here”. You can turn it off in Preferences › Shortcuts.
To grab text you cannot copy any other way: remote desktops, images, videos, dialog boxes. With version 1.1, press ⌃⌥C (or choose “Capture text from screen” in the menu): the screen dims, you draw a rectangle around the text, and it is recognized on your Mac and copied to the clipboard. Escape or a right-click cancels. Right after installation, the very first recognition can take about a minute.
In Unformat's menu, “Capture history” keeps the last ten copied or captured texts: one click puts any of them back on the clipboard. This history lives in memory only; “Clear history” empties it, and it disappears when you quit Unformat.
Just one: Screen Recording, requested the first time you use ⌃⌥C, to read the area you draw. Automatic cleaning needs no permission at all, and nothing leaves your Mac.
Yes: tick “Launch automatically at startup” in Preferences › General, then click “Apply and close”.
macOS 26 or later.
